Dixie State College is an open access institution; therefore, all students with the potential to succeed are welcome. However, each student must assume the responsibility to progress academically and technically while at Dixie State.

Low Academic Status

  1. If cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, a student is considered to be of low academic status.
  2. A student will also be of low academic status if they have transferred from another college with a cumulative GPA of below 2.0 or while on academic probation, suspension or dismissed at another school.

Low academic status is a warning that a student's GPA must be improved to remain at Dixie State College. It should also suggest that aid in course selection, better study habits, or personal counseling may be necessary. Categories of Low Academic Status:

  1. Warning—If a student’s GPA falls below 2.0, they will be placed on warning and must register through an advisor.
  2. Conditional Enrollment—If a student is on warning and does not achieve either a current or cumulative GPA of over 2.0, they will be placed on conditional enrollment and must register through an advisor with a contract.
  3. Suspension—If a student does not earn a 2.0 in either their cumulative or current GPA the semester following being placed on conditional enrollment, or if they do not fulfill their conditional enrollment contract, they will be suspended. This means they will not be allowed to register for at least one regular (fall or spring) semester.

At Dixie State College, there are many programs to help students who may be struggling academically. These programs range from free workshops offered to the whole student body to a one-credit class for students who need to sharpen their study and self-management skills. The following services are listed below to assist students who feel they need academic help beyond what the classroom can offer:

* ASC 1020 - SUCCESS SKILLS - This is a one-credit class designed to help students take charge of their own learning by developing competency in the skills essential for success in college and beyond. These skills include time management, learning to read textbooks, listening, note-taking, and preparing for and taking tests.

* TUTORING CENTER - All registered, degree-seeking DSC students have access to some form of tutoring. A tutor can assist in clarifying concepts and class material, and in improving study skills. Tutoring is FREE for all registered DSC students! It is located in the Browning Resource Center (downstairs from the Testing Center).

* ONLINE WRITING (OWL) LAB - The DSC OWL home page will guide you to many sites that can assist you in your writing. You can get help with writing skills such as brainstorming, revision, punctuation, and usage. Submit your paper to the English Dept. Writing Center by sending it as an e-mail attachment to owl@dixie.edu.

* ACADEMIC SUCCESS WORKSHOPS - These free workshops are sponsored by the Academic Advisement Center and are offered twice each month to students who may need to improve their study skills, but do not have the time to take a one-credit study skills class. (See workshop schedule page).

* ACADEMIC ADVISORS - The Academic Advisement Center has advisors who are trained to help students individually by recommending various programs, classes, and services that are designed to assist students at Dixie State College achieve success in their chosen field.
