SERVICES

Interpreter Services

American Sign Language, interpreting/transliterating, oral interpreting, cued language transliterating, and real time transcription will be provided upon eligibility.  Determination is made by staff of the Disability Resource Center as to which service is reasonable for deaf or hard of hearing students pertaining to all course related activities (class sessions, meetings with faculty, or required attendance at out-of–class activities).  Requests for interpreters for semester long classes should be made as far in advance as possible, but at least three weeks prior to the beginning of the semester to ensure the availability of interpreters.  Services are also provided for campus-wide, college sponsored events and provided when services are requested by the individual needing the service in a reasonable time.  Two weeks advance notice is requested.
NOTE: Interpreter services for non-academic functions or for non-students attending university functions will be paid for by the sponsoring department.  Please contact the department sponsoring the event you plan to attend to arrange interpreter services.

Exam Accommodations

Exam accommodations are reviewed each semester and are dependent upon the essential element of the class and the limitations presented by the disability.
When an exam accommodation is determined to be reasonable, it is the responsibility of the instructor of the class or program to provide the accommodation.  The Disability Resource Center offers exam proctoring as a service to instructors to assist them in providing the appropriate accommodations.  Every effort will be made to administer exams according to instructor directives.   In the event of scheduling conflicts, instructors will be contacted to discuss details for alternative arrangements.  Students must submit completed Exam Accommodation Forms.  Forms will not be accepted without complete information. All three copies must be submitted to the Disability Resource Center.  After processing, a copy will be provided to the student and the instructor.  Exam accommodation requests through the DRC should be requested with reasonable prior notice of 5 school days.

Students who alter exam accommodation forms, forge signatures, and conduct other misrepresentations on official documents will be referred to the Dean of Students, Del Beatty.

Exam integrity is strictly enforced and cheating will not be tolerated.  In the event a student is caught cheating, full disclosure will be made to the instructor.  Exam issues related to academic integrity will also be referred to the Dixie State College Dean of Students.

Memory Aids

Memory Aides may be utilized in unique circumstances for students with documented cognitive impairments (such as a traumatic brain injury or medical condition severe enough to qualify as a disability).  The use of memory aides as an accommodation is based on the particular nature of the student’s disability as specifically documented in the student’s comprehensive evaluation materials.

Memory Aides may be considered as class notes, open book or professor generated power point if available.

Documentation of the student’s disability must clearly demonstrate memory deficits affecting the student on a specific exam or specific type of exam question.  Dixie State College will conduct a thorough review, in consultation with the instructor, to determine the essential elements of the class and of the examination.  A decision will then be made as to the appropriateness of memory aides as an accommodation.

Note Taker Services

The accommodation of a note taker is reviewed each semester and is dependent upon the essential element of the class and the limitations presented by the disability. A student must attend class sessions in order to receive notes.  Students are responsible for reporting in a timely manner any problems with the note taking process and reporting if information is missing from the notes.  Note takers are recruited from peers in the class and a contract agreement is made with the DRC Coordinator.  Note takers are compensated at the completion of the semester or services are provided on a volunteer basis.

The Disability Resource Center will place a hold on the student’s academic record if loaned materials are not returned the day after final exams for the semester and in the same condition they were issued.  The hold will be removed when the materials are returned or replaced.
