  1. Determine if you need to apply to the IRB

  2. Determine if you are eligible to be Principal Investigator

    • Tenured or tenure track DSU faculty, including emeriti, who are certified by Dixie State University as having received training in the conduct of research using human subjects are eligible to serve as principal investigators (PI) for DSU projects involving human research subjects. Other faculty and staff members who fall into one of the following categories may be eligible to serve as PI with approval from the Vice-President of Academics: 1. Non-tenure track faculty, and other senior academic staff whose appointments include responsibility for the direct, independent design and direction of research; 2. Clinical faculty; 3. Senior administrative staff with appointments as Director (or equivalent) and responsibility for the direct, independent design and management of projects; and, 4. Visiting faculty. PI status may be limited to a specific research protocol (project) or activities associated with a specific grant, or have other conditions or limitations associated with approval.

  3. Take Required Training

    • CITI Training – Completion required prior to IRB approval

      • Must be completed by PI and anyone else named on the research (i.e, Co-PI, Research Assistant, Student Researcher, etc.)

      • At minimum, you need to complete the module related to your substantive discipline. For example, if you are conducting social behavioral science related research, this is the module that you complete and include with your paperwork. If in doubt, email us.

        • ​However, you are welcome to complete additional modules that you think are useful. For example, CITI offers a great module covering plagarism.

  6. Issues to consider when planning your research

    • Compensation for Research Participation

      • The IRB reviews both the amount of compensation proposed and the method and timing of disbursement to assure that neither are coercive or present undue influence.

        The IRB application must include the following.

        a.       The amount, method and terms of compensation.

        b.      The amount of compensation must be reasonable and commensurate to the time and effort requested of the subject (e.g., a survey taking a subject 10 minutes to complete would not justify $50 compensation for the completed survey).

        c.       If using a drawing, a verifiable method for determining winners must be established and referenced in the IRB application. Additionally there should be a description of the prize, the odds of winning, and any limitations or restrictions to winning, as well as the date of payoff.

        d.      For research studies requiring multiple data collections from an individual subject, credit for payment should accrue as the study progresses and not be contingent upon the subject completing the entire study. Unless it creates undue inconvenience or a coercive practice, payment to subjects who withdraw from the study may be made at the time they would have completed the study (or completed a phase of the study) had they not withdrawn.

        e.      While the entire payment should not be contingent upon completion of the entire study, payment of a small proportion (e.g., a balloon payment) as an incentive for completion of the study is acceptable providing that such incentive is not coercive. This amount should be reasonable and not so large as to unduly induce subjects to stay in the study when they would otherwise have withdrawn.

        f.        If the study is such that the investigator might withdraw a subject from the study (for example, not adhering to the research protocol), a description of compensation should be included

        g.       Information concerning payment, including the amount, method, terms and schedule should be set forth in the informed consent document.
